| Description | Oklahoma City University offers leveled dance instruction to students majoring in dance performance, dance management, arts management, musical theatre, vocal music performance, theatre and children's theater. Ten levels of instruction are provided in each technique of tap, jazz, and ballet. In addition to dance technique classes and a strong liberal arts foundation, dance performance majors take courses in international dance history and more specifically American dance history, musicals, and anatomy and physiology, dance health, pedagogy, contract law and management for performers and career preparation. Dance management majors take technique classes, courses in management, accounting, economics, finance, computers for arts managers, business law, business communications, marketing, performing arts tour management, presenting and sponsoring performances, managing non-profit arts organizations, technical theater for arts managers, development and fund-raising and managing dance studios. In addition to the strong liberal arts core, entertainment business majors must take classes in five separate focus areas: business, arts management, entertainment business, advertising and promotion, and technical theatre. The business core includes management principles, business communications, business statistics, survey of business law, organizational behavior, principles of economics, and elementary accounting. The arts management core includes touring performing arts, presenting & sponsoring performances, management of non-profit art organizations, and contracts & management of performers. The entertainment business core includes introduction to entertainment business and 15 customizable career-related academic electives. The advertising and promotion core includes entertainment marketing, principles of advertising, and public relations writing. The technical theater core includes introduction to technical theater for managers. Extensive performance and managerial opportunities are available through The American Spirit Dance Company, Spirit of Grace Liturgical Dancers, the OCU Pep Dancers, The Student Choreography Show, and the Oklahoma Opera & Musical Theater Company. |
