DescriptionThe Cooperative Program in Arts Management provides students with a well-rounded liberal arts education, with a specialization in arts management. The Program prepares students for professional careers in arts or cultural management - in performing and exhibiting arts organizations, in arts service organizations, in government, in funding agencies and arts councils. Students earn a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Specialist Designation in Arts Management. The Co-operative Programme in Arts Management (formerly Arts Administration) was established in 1984. Since that time it has produced many talented graduates who now hold positions in arts and cultural organizations across Canada and abroad. It has a strong and active Advisory Council comprised of senior arts managers and policy makers. In 1996-7 the Arts Management Programme became part of a new, integrated Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Programme that brings together arts management, visual arts (studio and art history), drama and music. VPA strengthens opportunities for collaboration and synergy among these disciplines. The Arts Management Programme is building two areas of strength or focus in teaching and research in the field of arts management nationally. The first relates to the challenges and opportunities related to the place of the arts in our increasingly pluralist society. The Cultural Pluralism and the Arts (CPA) Programme is a unique collaborative initiative aimed at stimulating a critical body of Canadian thought and practice on the arts and cultural production in a pluralist society. Declining levels of government funding sets the context for a second focused area of study, cultural entrepreneurship. Best Practices in Cultural Entrepreneurship is a joint initiative of Community Arts Ontario, the Ontario Human Resource Council and Arts 4 Change to develop learning resources and other tools for building entrepreneurial capacity in arts and cultural organizations.
