CfP: Arts and Culture. Building Capability and Creating Value

The International Conference of Social Theory, Politics and the Arts (STP&A) is an interdisciplinary gathering of researchers, policy-makers and practitioners that explores key trends, practices and policy issues affecting the arts around the world. It aims to foster a cross-cultural dialogue focusing on contemporary issues in arts and culture. The theme of this conference is "Arts and Culture: Building Capabilities and Creating Value". It wants to explore how individuals, organisations and institutions can expand and strengthen the capability of the arts and cultural sectors to create value for different stakeholders in society.
STP&A is the oldest and one of the most influential academic gatherings of researchers and practitioners in the field of arts management and cultural policy. It is affiliated with the Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society (JAMLS).

Generally, conference participants are drawn from a broad range of disciplines including, but not limited to, political science, sociology, economics, law, arts management, arts education, art history, museum studies, cultural studies, education, and policy studies.

Arts and Culture: Building Capabilities and Creating Value

This years issue on building capability focuses on the ability and capacity of individuals and organisations to create, disseminate and preserve arts and culture. It is reliant on collecting and integrating many resources such as personal or individual qualities, skills and experience; physical and material resources; financial resources; information resources; and intellectual resources. Value creation focuses on the benefits arts and culture bring to society, how they are defined and measured. This may be interpreted in different ways such as cultural value, economic value or social value.

This broad theme will be reflected in the keynote sessions and in the panels, but in the spirit of inclusiveness, we will also fully consider contributions that address other themes pertaining to arts management and cultural policy research.

Themes may include:

  • Accessibility, social inclusion, arts & social change, cultural practices
  • Arts Management/Business Models/Strategies
