CfP: 10th Annual Conference of the Association of Cultural Management of German-speaking Countries on the Cultural Sector in Transition

The 10th Annual Conference of the Association of Cultural Management in Germany, Austria and Switzerland will be held in Weimar, 19th-21st January 2017, Organisers are the University of Music Weimar, Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the the Association of Cultural Management in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The conference will deal with the issue "The Cultural Sector in Transition. The Transformation of Systems, Institutions and Formats". Instead of continuing to defend the status quo and rigidly conserving traditional structures, the conference would like to open up the field of cultural practice and discuss the key challenges facing the cultural system and cultural institutions today. Submissions can be submitted by 21st of May 2016.

Migration, digitalisation and globalisation involve an inevitable realignment of the cultural field. Methods, institutions and working conditions in cultural production and cultural consumption have undergone dramatic changes. Socio-economic, demographic and technological developments pose major challenges in areas such as cultural policy and cultural financing. Cultural and artistic production, distribution and reception are all affected. A repositioning and revaluation of the cultural sector is thus becoming apparent, and the power relations between publicly regulated, private-commercial and civic players and institutions are being renegotiated. This transformation requires a reorganisation and reassessment of our cultural system and its institutions.

However, despite the changes taking place, cultural-political debates are still dominated by old formulas such as Culture for All, or following a similar rationale the Bitterfelder Weg, a programme in the GDR designed to develop a socialist culture. These formulas often represent growth paradigms aimed at propagating the self-referential and self-legitimising logic of high culture (Theatre must be!) and thereby ignore or obfuscate the transformational processes taking place in society as a whole.

These challenges the conference wants to adress include changes in the cultural sector affecting competition, changing values and management structures, the diversification of supply and demand, as well as the challenges of cultural practice (also in a legal sense) caught between transnationalism, cultural protectionism and an ever-widening field of art.

Submissions and Proposals

The organisers invite submissions that deal with the topic on a macro, meso or micro level, that represent a global, regional or local approach, and that address questions regarding the transformation of cultural organisations and formats, not only in the German-speaking countries.

Plenary lectures, poster presentations and panel contributions are all welcome. Submissions (abstracts up to max. 2500 characters + short CV) in German or English should be submitted by 21st of May 2016 and sent to steffen.hoehne@hfm-weimar.de.
