Perspectives for the 21st Century
Opportunities and Challenges

With the relaunch of the Pinakotheken website in April of 2016 and particularly with the launch of the Online Collection just one year later in April 2017 the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen created two new reliable and up-to-date online resources that provide a foundation for the ongoing development of digital projects. In the course of planning and implementing this project the legal and technical restrictions that digital collections face regarding copyrights and the use of images became clear. In this context the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen is now perfectly positioned to initiate a public discussion on copyright laws and the digital revolution in museums. We must develop a long-term strategy to increase openness, remove barriers, and build reliable relationships in order to facilitate recognition of authenticity in the digital sphere and open up new forms of interactions with our visitors.

With the digital transformation of society, museum visitors see themselves in new roles and bring new expectations to their interactions with the museum. In response, museums must now also take on new roles and responsibilities. Smartphones and tablets in the galleries make the museum a place of production as well as reception.

Along with the task of presenting basic information and displaying highlights of the collection, the digital platforms of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and in particular the Pinakotheken must now also allow for participation. As sources of inspiration, the artworks of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen will soon also offer opportunities for contemplation and creativity in the digital sphere. As a reliable museum of the future we offer visitors of all ages and from every walk of life opportunities to inform themselves, learn about and experience our collection, no matter what their level of previous knowledge.

The conference ‘Museums in the Digital Sphere: Opportunities and Challenges’ on 6 October 2017 at the Pinakothek der Moderne will provide an opportunity to analyse the needs and wishes of museum visitors in the 21st century and in this context open up topics such as digital collections, transparency, and open access to public discussion. In the process we will address both technical restrictions (databases, structures, resources) and legal limitations (copyright, image rights) as well as the opportunities created by interlinking multiple collections in comprehensive platforms such as the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library – DDB), ‘bavarikon’, Europeana and introduce initiatives such as #openGLAM. Museums today face a considerable challenge. We must work together across institutions to develop a viable strategy for the digital presence of museums in the future.

To registrate the online form can be used. Deadline for registration is 6 October 2017.
