The theme of Communicating the Museums 19th edition is Museums Beyond Walls. From 6 9 November 2017, 300 culture professionals will debate the changing role of museums in our society.

For the last decade, Los Angeles has become the most vibrant destination in Northern America. Los Angeles is the new cultural hub of the US as plenty of thriving art projects emerge around the city.

The musical innovation of the 70s and the vivid film industry of Hollywood set the citys atmosphere of experimentation and innovation. As I attended the historic Womens March in LA on 21 January, the desire for change and unity was clearly a strong national sentiment. More than ever, arts organisations must be the voice of cultural diversity and embrace art to break down the walls which divide us.

Todays social and political environment and recent technological breakthroughs encourage museums to reach out beyond their walls. Cultural institutions have evolved to meet the expectations of their visitors and their communities.

Key questions include:

  • How should museums respond to social change?
  • How can museums be places of dialogue, giving context to debates for change?
  • How can museums take their expertise beyond their walls and into peoples everyday lives?
  • How can museums create a relationship with their visitors which extends beyond the visit?
  • How should museums team-up with diverse partners to expand their reach?
Confirmed speakers include:

  • Lars Ulrich Hansen, Head of Communication, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Denmark
  • Jennifer Northrop, Director of Marketing and Communications, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, USA
  • Tim Marlow, Director of artistic programmes, Royal Academy of Art, United Kingdom
