9th ELIA Leadership Symposium

Start: 2019-11-20 01:00
End: 2019-11-22 00:00
Location: China Academy of Arts
Place: Hangzhou, China
The symposium is hosted by China Academy of Art, known as the first arts university in China. During the programme, the delegates will have the opportunity to explore Hangzhou, one of the most renowned and prosperous Chinese cities; network and establish new connections with leaders of higher arts education institutions.

Theme: Mapping the Common Ground: Collaborations across cultures

The upcoming edition of the Leadership Symposium focuses on the challenges of cross-cultural collaboration within the realm of higher arts education. Prompted by the globalisation of the sector, internationalisation has become a key strategy. While exploring opportunities, we, leaders of arts institutions, are often confronted with significant cultural differences.

The symposium gives special attention to collaborations between leading Chinese and Western arts universities and academies, with the goal of mapping the common ground. How do we identify the "unthought of” that lies between cultures? What and how do we teach and do research in these contexts? What are some of the cultural biases that might stand in the way of fruitful collaborations? How can we, as leaders, equip our institutions with the right tools to overcome these biases?

Delegates of this unique event will get the opportunity to explore the theme of transcultural collaboration through keynotes, conversations with peers and practice explorations.

The Leadership Symposium brings together influential leaders from higher arts education institutions and universities across the globe for a timely exchange and discussion on how the economic, social, cultural, and political changes influence different aspects of their duties and responsibilities as local leaders in the field of education.

The three-day programme features inspiring high-profile keynote speeches, explorations of cross-cultural collaboration practices, networking moments and organised meetings.
