In the prolonged public discussion on the European constitution, and in the ongoing negotiations between governments, parliaments, public institutions, and academia, background information on why and to what end cultural heritage is so vitally important is an aspect that has not been much developed.
Different authors of the enlarged European Community, Ugo Bacchella, Alessandro Chechi, Costa Carras, Christopher Catling, Otto von der Gablentz, Denis de Kergorlay, Jelka Pirkovic, Jacek Purchla, Sneka Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic, Maddalena Rusconi, Rupert Strachwitz, Olivier de Trazegnies, Gijs de Vries and Adam Wilkinson provide necessary arguments for a Europe-wide discussion. The variety of connections between a common heritage, identity, citizenship, cohesion and democracy are pointed out.
Furthermore there are analyses of the changes and continuities of European culture, as well as the opportunities and risks which European heritage is facing. Finally some authors accentuate the importance of civil society in the promotion of a common European cultural space.
The book is a joint project of Europa Nostra, the pan-European federation for heritage, and Kulturstiftung Haus Europa, a Berlin based cultural policy think tank.
