European Museum of the Year Award 2011
The European Museum Forum is inviting European museums to take part in the competition for the European Museum of the Year Award 2011 (EMYA 2011). The Award was established in 1977 and is the most prestigious of its kind in Europe. It will be presented for 34th time in 2011. Throughout these years, EMYA has been a dynamic tool for the recognition of innovation, excellence and public quality in museums. It helped to explore the changes in the European museum field and it served as an instrument of international networking, bringing together the most advanced projects and people in the museum profession.
Contrary to the common belief, museums are changing and every year brings an array of new, unexpected ideas, new answers to the question how a museum can serve the community and society. The European Museum Forum ensures that EMYA reflects and keeps pace with these changes, and this year sees the addition of new Judges and Trustee Board Members, covering wider areas of professional interest, with wider international representation.
The following people have agreed to join the EMF as Trustees in 2010: Julien Anfruns, France, Director General, ICOM; Lila de Chaves, Greece, Secretary General, the World Friends of Museums; Goranka Horjan, Croatia, President, International Committee for Regional Museums, ICOM; and Chris Torch, Sweden, Artistic Director, Intercult, and Vice President, Culture Action Europe. Following the new policy, Zeljka Kolveschi, Croatia, and Margarida Ruas, Portugal, both long-standing EMF National Correspondents, were invited to work on the EMF Judging Panel, along with the EMYA winners Sirje Helme, Director, Art Museum of Estonia, former Director of KUMU, EMYA winner in 2008; Boris Micka, Spain, museum designer, Director, GPD Museums and Exhibitions, creator of MARQ, the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, EMYA winner in 2004; and Dr. Michael Ryan, Republic of Ireland, Director, Chester Beatty Library in Dublin, EMYA winner in 2002.
We are still negotiating with some other people who may be joining EMF as Judges or Trustees. New Awards have also been added as part of EMYA to better reflect the trends and developments which are being pioneered by museums right across the 47 countries recognized by the Council of Europe. Please see the conditions, list of the awards and application form for EMYA 2011 in the attachment. We would appreciate it if you published this information on the web sites of the national museum networks or simply forwarded it with an encouragement to take part to your colleagues. You are also cordially invited to attend the EMF Annual Meeting and European Museum of the Year Awards for 2010, which is being held in Tampere, Finland, from 1922 May 2010. We look forward to seeing you there and to your continued involvement and support of the work of the European Museum Foru
