New Institute for Arts Management
The newly amalgamated North West University (former Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of the North West) has started a brand new Institute for Arts Management and Development.
It is a first of it's kind in South Africa.
This institute will present training of international standard in arts management and all its disciplines to stimulate development in this field on a sustainable level in the broader South African arts community.
MAIN STRATEGIES
The Institute for arts management will follow two main strategies in its activities:
- To develop and present on a sustainable level a variety of university accredited courses in as many fields of arts management as possible.
- To present development projects in the field of arts management on all levels of society.
MAIN GOALS
The institute will strife to:
- Develop and present practical courses in arts management.
- Create sensible partnerships with all the relevant role-players in the arts environment.
- Focus strongly on training and empowerment on community level.
- Present sustainable development projects in the broader arts environment.
- Become financially self-sustainable.
- Present training on international standards.
- Apply international best practices in its management.
DESCRIPTION AF ACTIVITIES
The institute will be active with the following:
1. Different courses in arts management that can include:
- Administration and arts management on community level (elementary)
- Arts management (advanced)
- Marketing of the arts
- Sponsorship management
- Financial management in the arts
2. Courses in theatre management that can include:
- Technical aspects (sound, lighting, stage management)
- Theatre management
- Production management
3. Tour management in the arts (for individual artists as well as groups)
4. Labour relations in the arts
5. Training for schools in arts projects that can include:
- Arts and crafts
- Choir leaders training
- Drama and acting
6. Publication of music
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The activities and training of this institute will have a strong focus on the community and community arts projects. Community involvement will include training in basic business and management skills for even the arts and crafts seller to help this person managing his or her small business succesfully.
This institute will also create development projects focussed on the youth of the previously disadvantaged communities. These projects will aim to get the youth more actively involved in the arts.
STRUCTURE AND MANAGEMENT
The structure of the institute will be lean, streamline and affordable. International best practices will be applied in the management of this institute.
The institute will form part of the department of Culture of the North West University.
This institute also wants to establish international ties with other institutions and organizations involved in arts management.
