Opening new spaces in El Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid

On 26 September, and after four years of construction, the Museum of Contemporary Arts Reina Sofia opened their doors to the new section of the building. A poppy red wing covers a new art library, two concert and exhibition halls.
Architect Jean Nouvel intended "to open the old museum building towards the city", combining the 18th century Francisco Sabatini building with a new architectural avant-garde style. A bold plan, bearing in mind that the museum is situated at an urban place surrounded by busy traffic between train station Atocha and the still quite neglected part of Madrilenian quarter Lavapiés.

Nevertheless, by the amplification, the home of Picassos infamous Guernica is keen on seeking a higher operating level in the international contemporary arts scene. Unfortunately, being a global player in the world of arts institutions had its prize. Within the last six years, the museums extension had been a nightmare for three directors of the institution and two governments. Due to some constructional problems the final costs increased up to 92 million Euros, so the cultural budget for this year is all over its limit.

Many artists now fear that the Museum Reina Sofia will only exhibit their huge historical collection instead of buying new works of contemporary artists. Maybe there is hope that this will not occur since the announcement for the next trimester by the director Ana Martínez de Aguilar. Apart from a Retrospective Dennis Opperheim, another exhibition The three dimensions of Don Quijote. Quijote and Spanish Contemporary Arts and two further exhibitions of Curro González and Dora García are dedicated to the Spanish Contemporary Arts Scene.
