Position Vacant: Director of Händel-Haus Halle (Saale)

In the City of Halle (Saale), a university city with a rich cultural scene and tradition, an excellent place to live and to spend leisure hours, a city which in 2006 will celebrate its 1200th anniversary, the position of head of the Händel-Haus (with the title Director) within the Department of Culture and Education will be filled from November 1, 2005.
It is expected that the future Director of the Händel-Haus will actively and constructively work to implement the necessary restructuring.

After 1937, the Music Museum of the City of Halle (Saale) was established in the house in which Georg Friedrich Händel was born. It includes special collections relating to the life and work of Georg Friedrich Händel and to regional music history in particular that of the City of Halle (Saale) as well as a collection of historical musical instruments. The museum is a centre for research into and performance of Händels music in Halle (Saale), with all the associated activities, and it organises the annual Händel Festival of the City of Halle (Saale) in close collaboration with other cultural institutions of the city as well as with the International Georg Friedrich Händel Society (a registered society), the head office of which is located in the Händel-Haus.

Requirements:
University degree in musicology, Ph.D.,
Demonstrated profound specialist knowledge in the area of Baroque music,
Demonstrated research activity (including publications) in the area of Georg Friedrich Händels life and work,
Ability to lead a museum,
Foreign language competence, in particular excellent English skills; for native English-speakers very good German language skills are essential,
Experience abroad and an international network,
Management experience,
Professional experience in a position of leadership over a number of years,
Ability to lead and motivate staff,
Conflict management skills,
Flexibility and ability to work in a team,
Ability to perform under pressure,
Ability and willingness to take decisions and to execute them.

Tasks:
Develop and set goals and guidelines for the work in the Händel-Haus,
Provide conceptional input in the framework of the planning and running of the Händel Festival, and participate in the Händel Festival organisational committees,
Take decisions in issues relating to the specialist scientific areas, personnel, financial and organisational aspects of the Händel-Haus,
Provide conceptional input regarding and actively pursue the acquisition of objects of cultural significance, and develop the museums collections,
Conduct research based on the collections, library and archives of the Händel-Haus,
Make scientific contributions, in particular in the framework of the joint scientific projects of the museum and the Georg Friedrich Händel Society, including the editing of the Halle Händel Edition, and the Institute for Musicology of the Martin Luther University, write publications and reports,
Develop and implement a marketing strategy,
Conduct successful media relations and general public relations.


Compensation will be according to I a BAT-O (the public service tariff for the new Federal German states).
