The economic value of digital cultural heritage: models and strategies

This paper will address the economic value of having photographic resources available in digital formats.
What are the economic pros and cons of digital for cultural heritage projects and what are the new market realities being faced. Tanner will highlight the cost versus benefit relationships in digital images andbuilding digital repositories. He will then provide as an evidence base the results of the recent study for the Mellon Foundation on charging models for digital images in European cultural institutions and some early indicative results from the study of US art museums. This will lead to a discussion of the models and strategies that work for realising the economic value of the digital resource.
