Vitalising Cultural Action in the Arab Region
The European Cultural Foundation organised with the British Council and the DOEN Foundation, the first Conference on cultural policies in the Arab region in early June. The event, which took place in Beirut, marked an important step in gathering research and setting out recommendations to support planning and cultural cooperation in the Arab region.
The conference was a culmination of a regional initiative, launched in March 2009, and was led by Culture Resource (Al Mawred Al Thaqafy) and the project partners. The aim was to survey key cultural policies in the region in order to build a knowledge base and to then propose mechanisms that would vitalise cultural action in the Arab region. The initiative included eight countries in its first phase, with a plan to extend its scope to other Arab countries in the future.
The conference was attended by ministers, representatives of ministries of culture, independent cultural leaders and activities, academics, cultural policy specialists and the media from a large number of Arab and European countries, in addition to Turkey, Russia and the USA. The conference concluded with recommendations laid out here.
ECF is committed to work across Europe and its neighbouring regions to inspire change through arts and culture. Visit this page for more information on our advocacy work.
