Winners of the European Museum of the Year Awards 2012
At this years European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) Ceremony, which took place at the Penafiel Municipal Museum in Portugal on 19 May, the EMYA Judging Panel was delighted to announce the Museo de Madinat al-Zahra in Cordoba in Spain as the European Museum of the Year 2012 for its outstanding achievements for public quality and excellence.
The Museum represents a visual memory of the mixed and diverse past of Andalucia aiming to build a bridge between different cultures in contemporary Europe. Together with the partially recovered and restored archaeological site it represents a magnificent, complex city, its supporting infrastructure, buildings and gardens, as well as the social organisation and everyday life of its 10,000 inhabitants.
During the ceremony further awards were announced for special achievements:
Kenneth Hudson Award: Glasnevin Museum, Dublin, Ireland

Silletto Prize: TOPIC: the International Puppet Museum Centre, Tolosa, Spain

Council of Europe Museum Prize: Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum Kulturen der Welt (Cultures of the World), Cologne, Germany
The Council of Europe Museum Prize was awarded by the Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) based on a short list of three candidates submitted by the EMYA Judging Panel. It was announced at a special Ceremony held in Strasbourg on 25 April.

- Audax Textielmuseum, Tilburg, The Netherlands
- The Museum of a Disappeared Taste Kolomna Pastilla, Kolomna, Russia
- The Museum of Prijepolje, Serbia
- The Peoples History Museum in Manchester, UK

There is still time to enter the competition for the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) 2013 and Council of Europe Museum Prize. The EMYA award goes to a museum which contributes most directly to attracting audiences and satisfying its visitors with unique atmosphere, imaginative interpretation and presentation, a creative approach to education and social responsibility. Deadline for application is 31 May 2012.
