ICC Leading Culture Survey

The Institute of Cultural Capital (ICC) is developing a programme of research linked to leadership in the UK's arts and cultural sector. As an initial starting point we are interested in gauging the opinions of workforce members in relation to the value of arts and culture in contemporary Britain, and subsequent leadership challenges and opportunities facing the sector. The study does not assume that leadership is the domain of a select number of practitioners with executive responsibilities in high profile institutions -- as such all people currently working across the breadth of arts and cultural organisations in the UK are invited to take part in the following online survey.
The survey has been designed to include issues of topical debate within the sector, including the 'measurement' of cultural value, a key objective of the Department of Culture Media and Sport; a growing emphasis on collaborative working, as reflected by recent initiatives such as the sector-led Let's Work Together conference; and their implications for cultural leadership. These are explored within the context of a retreat in leadership development in the arts following what was an unprecedented era of strategic intervention -- the most significant example of this is the closure of the Cultural Leadership Programme in March 2011.
The survey is divided into four sections: Cultural value in contemporary Britain; Cultural leadership challenges and opportunities; Cultural leadership development; and finally About You. This final section includes questions about participants' professional practice and some demographic profiling (including age and geographic region) to enable different levels of analysis. The survey method has been chosen specifically to allow the timely and accessible collection of snapshot data -- respondents are invited to give optional additional comments at the end of each section.
The purpose of the survey therefore is to encourage arts and cultural practitioners to reflect on and consider sector leadership capacity and capabilities in light of current challenges and opportunities. This data will be used to advance professional debate in association with supporters of the study, and to inform the development of ongoing collaborative research programmes and professional development opportunities with arts and cultural practitioners.
All participants will remain anonymous; responses will be treated in the strictest confidence and used for research purposes only by the ICC team. For more information on the study, its purpose and future application please contact kerry@iccliverpool.ac.uk
The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete, and will be available until Monday 16th January 2012.
By continuing with the survey you are giving your consent for data provided to be used in the research. We thank you in advance for your time and most valuable contribution to the study.
