Arts Management Quarterly

No. 139: Connecting Research and Practice

Researchers and practitioners in the field of arts and cultural management grapple a similar topic from different perspectives. Still, there are difficulties in connecting and enriching one another. This issue of Arts Management Quarterly aims to illuminate the disparities between these two strands and provide examples of how they can be connected.

Arts and cultural management has not only become professionalized, but also a highly specialized field of knowledge. Unfortunately, while both research and practice strive for improvement, they have developed in different directions due to ever more diverging priorities and languages. Consequently, there exists a gap between the findings of arts and cultural management research and the day-to-day work in organizations which detains the sector from critically reflecting and overcoming deeply ingrained but outdated Western perceptions and attitudes.

However, there are of course insightful thoughts, approaches, and examples for new work routines to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and implement the acquisition and application of the other field’s knowledge.
