Description: The International Council of Museums (ICOM) is devoted to the promotion and development of museums and the museum profession at an international level. ICOM is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) maintaining formal relations with UNESCO. It has a consultative status to the United Nations' Economic and Social Council. ICOM was created in 1946 and has around 16,000 members in 147 countries. The membership participates in the activities of 106 National Committees and 28 International Committees. Some National Committees have also organised on a regional level to reinforce their action. ICOM is affiliated with 13 international associations.

Description: France, Italy and the UK are working together on Multilingual Inventory of Cultural Heritage in Europ (MICHAEL), a ground-breaking project that aims to open up worldwide access to the European cultural heritage. The project is supported by the European Commission with funding through its eTen programme, which is dedicated to the deployment of new technologies in Europe.
It aims to provide simple and quick access to the digital collections of museums, libraries and archives from different European countries. Work began in June 2004, with the focus on implementing an innovative multi-lingual open source platform that will be equipped with a search engine. By 2007, the MICHAEL platform will be capable of retrieving digital collections that are dispersed across Europe. There will be many uses for MICHAEL, for example students and researchers will be able to discover information about European collections that might previously have been difficult to find.The services will also support cultural tourism, the creative industries and other interests.

Description: The .museum top-level domain began operating on November 1, 2001. With it, museums acquired significant new means for increasing their visibility and identity on the Internet. The Museum Domain Management Association - MuseDoma - is responsible for the policies and operation of the new domain. Registration in .museum is restricted to museums, museum organizations and individual members of the museum profession according to the definition established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). If you are interested in registering a .museum name, here are the Application forms. .museum differs from other top-level domains in the way its policy is maintained. The eligibility of each applicant is verified by MuseDoma, which also ensures that all names in .museum conform to specified naming conventions. MuseDoma does not formally register the names that are selected during this process and has authorized selected ICANN Accredited Registrars for that purpose. These registrars are presently commencing operation with .museum. MuseDoma had previously provided an interim service enabling all approved names to be taken into immediate use. Names activated in that manner, are visible to Internet users through a public index and may also be used for both website and e-mail addresses.
